  • Dionysus is the god of wine and drunken revelry in Greek mythology. He is a patron of the theater and an agricultural/fertility god.
  • He is a god that had two distinct origins. On the one hand, Dionysus was the god of wine, agriculture, and fertility of nature, who is also the patron god of the Greek stage. On the other hand, he also represents the great features of mystery religions.
  • Dionysus was a god known for his lightheartness and always offered his help to anyone in need. He was therefore very popular among gods and mortals and many festivals were being held every year in his honor, Dionysus was many times misunderstood.
  • His symbol or attribute were, Grapes, wine cups, and wine skins; the staff formed of a pine-cone on a stick called a thyrsus.
  • Dionysus had an unusual birth.. Zeus, his father, disguised himself to get Semele to fall in love with him. She became pregnant with Zeus’s child. Hera wanted revenge when she found out about the affair. She disguised herself as a mortal and became Semele’s maidservant. She convinced Semele to ask Zeus to reveal his glory and prove that he really was a god. So Semele asked for one wish of Zeus. He promised to grant it. She asked for him to reveal his glory to her, and he was bound to comply knowing it would be disastrous for his mortal lover. When he revealed himself, Semele was consumed by his radiance. Zeus ordered Hermes to save the baby and had it put into his own thigh. Three months later, Dionysus was born.
  • What he looks like, Dionysus is usually depicted as a dark haired, bearded young man but he can be shown beardless as well.
  • Dionysus has been associated with many women in Greek mythology, therefore he has many children.
  • Dionysus is also one of the very few that was able to bring a dead person out of the underworld.
  • Dionysus became one of the most important gods in everyday life. He became associated with several key concepts. One was rebirth after death.
  • Dionysus was one of the Olympian gods who actually did not live in Mount Olympus, but was constantly traveling around the world with Satyrs and Maenads in order to discover the secrets of wine-making.
  • Dionysus has a Roman name as well:- Bacchus.

I choose the color purple, because he is the god of wine. When I think of wine I think of grapes, which are purple.
